Hi... I just learned of some distrubing news, at least it was distrubing to me. I am not a
recognized mechanic and I try to learn how to do some things myself. Replacing a 455 engine is not
one of my task. In the process of getting this done the second time (the last two engines both
spund rod bearings) contamination due to "NOT REPLACING OIL COOLER AND OIL LINES). Any way in the
process of putting the engine back together somebody cracked the intake manifold. I have spent a
lot of money so far and time finding one. I did, I had it Theramal Cleaned by NAPA and shipped to
Utah by USP. This morning while communicating with a young man on the Internet about a manifold he
had for sale for a 455 Olds Engine. He told me after talking for a while that the intake I needed
was a LOW PROFILE MANIFOLD, either from the early 455's or all TORNADOS. This is the first I heard
of this. If I am ignorant to this information and you all know about the differences. Please
disregard and trash! If you are like me and not so educated it might be worth your while to know
this. I called Mondello in CA whom I just learned about also, he builds engines for GMC's and he
is shipping a 455 Tornado intake manifold to Utah for me. The cost was $200.00 plus shipping. I
strongly recommend if you have this engine or run across one you best get it and keep it for parts.
Especially the intake manifold and heads. I guess these things are becomming very valuable to
people like you and me who own the GMC. Todate not coundting the inconveience, rental car hotel
etc. I have about 6K in this newlyt rebuilt 455. If I had know this cost figuers earlier and if I
knew about Mondello, I would have saved my self a lot of grief. As it is I have a 455 that was
built by the Motor Works out of Washing State which builds them for boat applications and I hope it
is strong enough for the GMC. Only time will tell. Also learned the Forged Cranks are the best and
cost is very expensive too. Thanks for listening. Chuck
