I don't know why any one would want to haul that great big OEM jack
around! I got a couple of short 6000lbs. bottle jacks and use them all
the time for jacking the vehicle. If vehicle was too low at the back
from a flat tire, I carry a few short bits of wood that I can run the
wheels up onto to raise things up a bit. So far never a problem.
I don't think all gas and parts are equal. What about the co's that put
alcohol in theirs. How does on know that a company doesn't ask for their
own specs with their label on it. For example when GM brought out the
GMC they got the best steel wheels with the least amount of runout from
the assembly line for the GMC. The rest went on other vehicles. Perhaps
the same sort of thing happens in other areas of the market place. Just
my idea.
Re steering box--I sent mine back to Ontario Can. and had it rebuilt
with the faster ratio.Am pleased with the result. With the dollar
exchange it might really pay for US folk to send theirs up to Can .
Three years ago it cost me$362.00 Can. including shipping for a complete
rebuild of my one. Might cost more now but that would convert into about
$240. US approx.
Re carbs--Chuck how in the world do you get 13.5 MPG presumably US?
Maybe you put it in neutral down hills! Tell us your secret .
Steering Stabilizer--someone was asking about the bracket. I cut mine
off to put on the Safety stabilizer one. As I recall the original mount
was like an L bracket on the back of the cross member. The small OEM
shock absorber attached to it.
Wheel Torque--I know the book says 250 lbs and I once asked W.S. and he
claimed it was right , but frankly I don't believe it!! At that amount I
think ultimately the threads will stretch and Golby once talked about
that in an article in the GMCMHMP.In another article in FMCA on wheels a
long time ago they talked of max torque for different sized wheel bolts
and 9/16" ( I think thats our size) it wasn't anywhere near 250lbs. Any
way thats what I think. If your wheels fall off with less, just remember
I don't know you, and you have never heard of me. That keeps it simple
and we can still be friends.
While I'm rambling on, on all these things- are there any more comments
on tire chains vs. tire cables and also sizing of carb jets??
Got to hit the hay,
Claude.
