I put on Bilstein shocks 40,000 plus miles ago. Recently I had the right
middle one break at the end of the shaft where it joins to the main
body. It was replaced by Cinnabar as per their lifetime guarantee,
however, it was still expensive as by the time i paid shipping and
getting it from east to west and into Canada and returned the old part,
it cost about 60.00 Canadian. A new one was about 82.00 US at that time.
I am quite satisfied with them and would consider putting on again
especially with lifetime guarantee. In remounting I think it is
important to be sure that there is not sideways pressure on the shock
from the up and down travel of the wheel. If wheel alignments are out,
or if one did not get the washer spacing right, I think one might create
a problem in the future potentially. I don't think this is why mine
broke, but it did make me examine very carefully the shock travel and
any side pressure potentially being put on the two mounting ends. In
sharp turns likely there is some pressure put on them from the twisting
of the wheeels.I have no idea why mine broke, the rest of it was fine.
In any case it was replaced.
If any are considering putting on any brand other than the standard ones
, be sure it is one set up for the rear wheels of a GMC as they work for
the unique air springing arrangement of our rear end.
