I take issue with the statement that Headers are only 5% improvement &
overheat the engine compartment. Those of you that was at the Western
States Ukiah Roundup should have heard Jerry Jardine's presentation on
the exhaust system where he explained the required modifications for
improved performance. Installation of headers alone will not give you
much performance improvement w/o replacing the mufflers with low back
pressure type. Then the tail pipe becomes the major restrictor. A three
inch tail pipe eliminates it as a restrictor. The OEM mufflers are the
most restrictive component in the OEM exhaust system. You must take out
all of the restrictor to optimize performance. OEM mufflers can indeed
make the engine compartment hotter due to larger surface area for
radiation if the exhaust is not allowed to exit the rear tail pipe w/o
significant restrictors.
You must look at the whole picture to improve the exhaust system, not
just one component. You can not convince me that I did not get
significant improvement in performance with a total exhaust system
upgrade (Headers, Low Back pressure mufflers & three inch tail pipe).
My dyno is a hill out of Bakersfield, CA South (I-5) called "The Grape
Vine" (a long hard 6%+ grade). Before exhaust upgrade, best speed in
second gear was 42 mph.....after only exhaust upgrade, easy 60 mph climb
in 2nd gear. Now that's a DYNO test that means something !!! Also my
engine compartment did cool down from prior temperature.
No way would I go back to the OEM Exhaust system even if you paid me to
do so !!!
Jim you should have heard Jerry Jardine's presentation...a man that is in
the exhaust business from the beginning of time...with lots of valuable
test data on our exhaust system.
