I owned a 31' Airstream Trailer prior to buying my GMC. I averaged 16
mpg
on long trips pulling it with a Dodge Cummins Diesel. Shorter trips
within a hundred miles or so through small towns I averaged about 14
mpg. The GVW of both units was 11,500 to 12,500 according to what I
hauled in the pickup and the trailer. Also, my car is a 85 Mercedes
diesel which provides excellent mileage for the size of the vehicle. I
don't mind the noise and fumes based on the performance and engine life
expectancy I get. Although as many have pointed out the Olds 455 has
equal life span properly maintained.
Has anyone swapped the 455 olds for a diesel. If so, what engine did
they
use. My Dodge provides 200 HP @400' lbs of torque driving a 3:54 rear
end
which isn't two far off from my Olds 455 in the GMC.
Airstream used an Isuzu 5.9L turbo diesel in a 28' classic motorhome in
1981 and 1982. The gas version was a GMC 454 diving a 3 spd auto. This
is refuted to get as high as 14 MPG. I have yet to find any details
about the Airstream the good folks on their website aren't as responsive
as the GMC gang. I know the Cummins would not fit due to size and
weight. Too tall and wet weight in excess of 1000 lbs. I am not overly
fond of the GMC pickup Diesels.
I am wondering if this might be a feasible alternative for the Olds 455
if
you didn't mind the diesel.
