I too am preparing to redo my drivers compartment with new seats
and carpet. I recently drove another GMC and commented on how
quiet the engine was. It could literally not be heard.
Following is a very inexpensive noise reduction idea.
Home Depot has a blue styrofoam insulation board. They come
in 4x8 sheets. They are exact thickness of standard firring strips
ie; 1x2 or 1x3 pine boards.
Take up all carpet and remove seats. Using 1x2s or 1x3s, screw
boards to outline floor area and hatch. Then criss cross to create
16x16 or 24x24 square openings. Size is not critical. Cut foam
to fit snugly in squares. Then cover with 1/4 or 3/8 luan plywood.
If you use pine and luan plywood weight is negligible. I estimate
25 to 35 lbs.
Do top of driving compartment and sides near stairs. On hatch I
plan to overlap or offset about 1 inch.
Proceedure will also greatly reduce heat transfer from the engine.
You must allow a 2 to 3 inch border along each side in case you ever
need to remove the plastic sidewalls by seats. Just cut a piece of
plywood the width of the firring strip and glue together so they
may be removed together.
Just an idea for what its worth.
Then carpet.
I plan to use a good grade of padding under carpet. I also plan to
insulate as above all the way to back of coach when I carpet that area.
Bunks:
Alex Sirum has several used bunk sets.
