Having bought my first GMC in 1979 (a 23'-'73 Glacier) and driving them
things for over 250,000 miles, I don't have to think back much for
adventures. As for my CV joint coming off, I had swapped out my motor twice,
didn't use new bolts or blue lock or torque it tight either time. So.my bad.
I'm older, somewhat wiser, and still The resourceful Norse.
OK just another quick one. I had been using the coach as a truck, hauling my
daughter and her junk to USC for her Jr. year. Dropped her off and headed
back up 101. Detected a STRONG protest coming from the right rear axle,
something worse than a 3 year old on an airplane in the seat just behind
you. As this also was on a Sunday night, and after playing moving man with
about 500 miles under the belt for the day, took a nearby motel and planned
the strategy. They still had a phonebook, found a wheel/brake/muffler shop
that looked like it had someone working there with grey hair and was in
their parking lot with donuts at 7:00 the next morning.
Owner says you can get a new axle or I can weld it up and turn it on my
lathe and have you on the road in about two hours. That axle and bearing are
still on that coach.
