Getting Roxie Back on the Road

Changed oil and filter on the Onan, used Castrol 10w30 high mileage. The generator will now go on the back burner to be worked on after the running gear.
So, I'm trying to figure out the brakes, or lack thereof, when I found this:

So I guess I need a wheel bearing. Will check the other side too. Good news, so far the brakes back there look fine..

Inner bearing was pretty pooched, outer one wasn't far behind. The dust cap had a hole in it, water must have gotten in. So, I picked up most of the parts this morning, waiting for a race and a seal which should be here Tuesday.

Good job finding it at home, rather than on the road. I bet that's a relief! Now I feel like jacking mine up and giving all the wheels a good spin again.

Be aware that the rear axle seals available now must be left slightly proud of the hub so they don't touch the bearing. Also proper torquing of the axle nut is important for proper pre-load.

You can find the info here:

Of course I read this now...
I just wasted a seal. I pressed it in flush, then noticed the seal lip nearest to the bearing was actually touching the bearing. Didn't seem right, so I pulled it back out, and now here I am. I guess I'll give it another go.

I saw a photo where a fellow cut a hole the size of the OD of the seal out of a piece of plastic of the right thickness. This allowed him to press the seal in to the right depth.

I think it was on Facebook, but when I went looking for it, I could not find it. Too many GMC groups and FB's search function is so bad I can't find my own posts sometimes!.

Yeah, a spacer would be nice to have in there to keep it straight if it's not going to be flush

Was it red? I think I came across that in my all-too-late searching as well. It looked like that would work pretty well.

I was able to eyeball it just fine once I knew to pay attention. Just knowing seemed to be the entire battle this time.

Yes it was red, so you saw it as well.

That link now appears to be broken. Is this info anywhere else? Oddly, can't find procedure or diagram in the service manual.

Burl,
That's strange, the link leads to a page in the resources section of this website. I just clicked on it myself and it took me to the Resource, but you must click the Download button on the top right of the page to get the actual drawing.
Try this direct link:

Ahh, I see. I expected the photo to show up in the regular place, not have to be downloaded. Thanks, that works.
Gotta wonder why instruction #5: "rotate hub while tightening or loosinging spindle nut", isn't instruction #1?

BTW, never put a latex glove over the greasy spindle to protect it from the elements, now I have a gooey mess to clean up.

I haven't done any updates in a while...not that I managed to get a lot done though, too many other issues and projects taking up time.
Anyhow, I got the wheel bearing sorted

I next tried to get some brakes working properly and ran into frustration, I just couldn't get a good hard pedal.
I installed a PVMH distribution valve and tried to bleed it. I finally gave up on the master cylinder it came with, which is supposedly new, but of course probably Chinese made junk. So I recently bought another Chinese MC, I went to 6 parts shops in town and ended up with a Pronto master cylinder.
I bench bled it, installed it, tried vacuum bleeding it and that wasn't working well, so I made a quick and dirty pressure bleeder cap and it seemed to work quite well, got lots of air out of the rears. Will try the fronts tomorrow.

Now though, my PVMH distribution valve has tripped, spool shifted, I do have the insert to hold it centered if I want to bleed it more with the pedal, but what's the best way to get it back centered? A mechanic friend said kicking the brake pedal often works, otherwise I guess I'll have to remove the switch and try to poke it back into place?

Also worked on the wiper washers, earlier I installed a new tank and pump, but the electric switch was busted so couldn't really try it. Anyhow, Installed a new toggle switch and wired it so that up or down works.

While I was in there though, I found this small broken wire on the steering column....any idea what it's for?
