I use regular octane, i.e. cheap stuff, all the time.

I purchase the highest octane available. Price not an issue as annual
mileage is limited. We do a lot of "hill" (read mountains) work here in the
Northwest, and I had pre-detonation problems with lower octane ratings.
Also towing a 3,600# Jeep Wrangler at times, motorcycle in trailer at other
times.

Good point.
I do recall that I'd go higher octane in the hills before I had ping
controller and no EFI.

Regular, which is 85 octane here at 5000' elevation.

Cheapest I can find!

Two years ago I travelled east from Indiana to Maine with a fellow
Sunshine Statesmen who had a newly rebuilt engine and he decided to treat
it right by buying only name brand fuel. Needless to say, we refuled at
different gas stations, sometimes next door or across the road!

The interesting thing about this is even with 300k miles on my tired old
455 he average only a half mile per gallon better than I did. Will his
engine last longer than mine? Only the "Shadow Knows" and so far he
hasn't given me a clue.

I just use the basic fuel at 86 or 87... I doesn't knock or give me any
problems. I hear of others who desire to use the highest octane. I can't seem
to understand why.
I think mine runs fine with that.

I'm late to this thread. I burn the cheapest I can find as well. I've only had
the coach 5,000 miles but it runs fine. The previous owner only burned cheap
gas too (80,000 miles worth) with no difficulty.

Hate to blow the myth of "branded" gasoline but here it is. Lived near an
oil refinery when growing up. All brand name tankers filled up along with
the un-branded using the same hoses. At least, all but one, EXXON.

The same is true here in my town today, one fuel depot on the Miss. River
and all branded & non-branded get their gasoline from the same terminal
except EXXON, which has it's own terminal. So, you choose which you are
comfortable with.

Seems EXXON requires its distributors to purchase from their own refineries.
Any difference, I doubt it.

I believe I can tell you the same thing about anti freeze. Of course this
is a few years back, but, I had a 1962 summer job working in a warehouse for
a plastic pellet (cycolac) manufacturer. One early morning, a truck drove
up to be loaded out and I noticed he had about a dozen different brands of
anti freeze in the nose of the trailer. I commented to him that he must
have gotten up awfully early to hit all the places for the brands he had.
He said no, they all came from the same factory.

Gene:

I've seen it published time and again over the years to burn the lowest
grade of gas consistent without having engine knock (pinging). Anything
else, is considered a waste of money.

Having said that, I'm equally amazed at all the claims you hear from people
who burn a higher grade of gas (e. g. cleaner, cooler, more power, etc.).

I always purchase the cheapest gas along my route's.

The best way to tell if engine oil is made by the same people, is to go by the
shape of the bottle. Same shape = same manufacturer. Darren
