The following is the best answer I could get from Michelin.
The terms "immediate future" and "will eventually disappear" in the
second paragraph catch my attention.
Does anyone have information to support the rumor of a discontinuence
at the end of '97 ??

FURTHER TO YOUR MESSAGE REGARDING THE SUPPLY OF 8.75R16.5 FOR
MOTORHOMES, WE WISH TO ADVISE YOU OF THE FOLLOWING:
The 16.5" wheel has been a subject of much controversy over the years,
stemming from the relative ease with which one of these tires may be
mistakenly mounted on a 16" rim. They have been discontinued at OEM
for several years and are slowly disappearing from the marketplace.
As this was what was considered as a "commercial" dimension (used
primarily on heavier vehicle chassis destined for commercial
applications) the tire has always been featured in the XPS family of
tires.
The 8.75R16.5 XPS Rib remains available in an LRE. Michelin does not
have any plans to discontinue this size in the immediate future. It
will eventually disappear, as did the HR78R15 size and many others.
For your information, this size continues to be available in some
BFGoodrich & Uniroyal offerings.
We hope the above information will be satisfactory and would like to
take this opportunity to thank you for the interest you show in our
products.
