Dick--

I have a '77 GMC and it had originally a large fiberglass shroud that
attached to the back of the rad. Attached to it was a large and heavy
circular rubber and steele contraption encirculing the fan blade and
also attached to the motor with various brackets. While it protected you
from getting your fingers from being clipped off by the fan and it did
keep the air directed ahead towards the motor, it was weight and clutter
I didn't want or need! As well it made the front of the motor hard to
access.

The April '97 issue of Motorhome Marketplace described a mod done by Ken
Thoma of replacing this rubber/steele with a split in half sheet metal
fabrication which attaches to the fiberglass shroud and not to the
motor. It was very easy to make and it now allows very easy acces to all
components at the front--fan,waterpump,gas pump, belts etc. This is done
by quickly undoing 4 screws from the bottom half of it and it opens up
the whole area from the bottom.

This was one of the better and simple mods that I have done and I would
recommend it to any and all GMC'ers. So just my suggestion.
