Thanks for the responses to my recent question about a new installation of
the Hayden #2797 fan clutch, which never stopped "roaring". Since then, I
have talked to the Hayden technical people, and they advised that the Hayden
#2797 is too much clutch for the fan installed on my 1978 403 engine. At
their suggestion, I changed to the #2747. The result is that it is close to
the original. I still think it is a bit too sensitive, as it "roars" in
normal traffic. Above about 45 MPH, it quiets down as it is supposed to. I
am presently on the road, and will evaluate it further.

I hope that I can raise the "engage" temperature to reduce the "roar" in the
city. In this regard, have any of you relocated the "end-point" of the
bi-metal spring?

I was able to make additional slots in the bracket that holds the spring in
place with a dremmel tool cut-off wheel. Works good and gives you more
options for setting the temperature. Be sure that you use the temperature
gauge to set the fan clutch and not the sound of the clutch. My clutch does
engage in city driving when the outside temps are in the low 80's (or high
70's if the dash A/C is on). I think this is normal operation. It is
annoying but it does keep the engine cool. Unlike my old fan clutch which
did not work at all.....
