About a month ago I had indicated that I had great experience with
the Mr. Gasket Ultraseal header gasket but I didn't have the number
at that time. It is part number 5945. These gaskets have a steel
core with a silicone rubber interior and a graphite impregnated
exterior. They allow movement of the manifold with expansion and
contraction without blowing the gasket. I had a set in for about 8
years before I had Buskirk replace my engine last summer.
I had to replace one of my gaskets in Feb. this year on the way to
Rayne but all I could find was a NAPA gasket that looked similar.
The NAPA part is 95028SG. It is described as "NitroSeal High
Performance Exhaust Header Gasket".
Both have a black color and the surface is smooth and waxy in
appearance. They both are graphite impregnated.
I have just found that the six month old NAPA one now has a small
leak so I've ordered a set of the Mr. Gasket ones from AutoZone for
$22.95.
I first used this gasket while I lived in California. I lived in
Tiburon (San Francisco Bay area) and my daughter was going to college
in LA. We used to drive the 800 mile round trip every other month or
so and I usually blew out a manifold gasket going up the Grapevine
north of Los Angeles - usually just the right side one for some
reason. This is a steep long, long grade. Going up it my manifolds
would glow red and, of course, expand and the center of the gasket
would blow out. I always carried a set of the standard embossed
metal ones with me and got pretty good at replacing the gasket from
inside the motor box in a rest area near the top of the grade in
about 20 minutes. I knew there had to be something better and
happened to mention the problem to a friend who used to track race
and he put me on to the Mr. Gasket product. I put one set in and
never blew a gasket out again on that grade. Probably went up it at
least 8 more times. Also moved to Santa Fe and lived here 6 years
and went up a lot of Rocky Mountain grades with no problems.

I see that they also make a copper gasket set but I've never tried
them as the Ultraseal one solved my problem. And -- no -- I am not
being paid by Mr. Gasket to hype their product!
