Engine water pump supplier

Seriously, do you believe that balancing a 4-41/2 inch water pump impeller is going to make a difference in a 455 or 403 CID engine. Give me a break here. You need to get your GMCMH priorities correct.

Hi Scott,
If you are going to have the timing cover off... then I’d suggest that you bolt your chosen water pump up to it and check the alignment between the holes in the cover and the water pump casting. When I rebuilt my engine I found that part of the water pump housing was blocking about 30% of the hole through the cover on the driver’s side…and that was on the same side that had a crack in the head in the #1 cylinder which was the cause of the top-end rebuild in the first place.

I took some pictures of a mock-up in order to help show my findings: http://www.jcmco.com/gallery/album28

Good, Scott. May I suggest as a Tejan you might want to subscribe to my favorite Manly Man's magazine, Truck and Testicle

I already have that subscription. In fact I get it twice a month!

Gary I really don't think the pump balance will effect the engine. At the rpm it turns it sure will have an effect on those little bearings in the pump with the rather large fan out there on an overhung shaft. If you don't balance that new pump impeller combination at some harmonic of normal speed your chances of premature bearing failure is very high. With all the work that goes into changing out a pump why not just buy the right one from the right supplier, unless you don't value your time.
