EKE info

Hi all,

Just a question for those that have installed Caspro's EKE. I went out today
for a test drive with gas tanks filled with regular gas(1st time on regular
gas) and all seemed to work as stated, slight pinging which soon clears up,
But at times I have pinging starting out from stop light which clears also.
Is it normal to have pinging at stoplight starts, my timing is set at 13* /
end of
timing tab? I do like the added throttle responds from the advance timing
Did not replace my transducer, Guess Larry Nelson was right I
just could not rap head fast enough by myself while also watching timing
light, But I still did it myself by just tapping and watching my tach. drop
RPM's. Seemed to work for me. Thanks for any info.

My EKE will respond to hammer taps, but it's hell to see the response on the timing marks. I have to stand on my head to hit the engine and see the Vib. damper at the same time. My engine knocks a very little at any kind of real load(like starting from a stop) but quickly stops. In just 1 or 2 seconds the small knock noise quites down. When going up hills at 75 you can hear a little knock, just under it's breath. I've got the timing set at 12. No matter how i set the EKE you can hear that little knock. And NO, it's not rods. If I fill the tank with hi test the knock goes away.
I always test it with the engine cover off.
Ron, that's too much to do, save some work to do on the road. Today I'm rebuilding my ignition system. Tomorrow, the carb. Sunday I'm resealing the roof. This is a family reunion, and they leave me alone while I'm working on Homer. Stop by in Southern Indiana if you have time. Hot Showers on us. We'll be home next Thursday.
Oh, and on the wife who doesn't like the GMC. That's not a burden a partner should put on another. Ask her what other hobbies she would tolerate.

Another easy way to get the tapping is to use a battery powered
electric drill with a socket on a bolt heat at the back of the engine
head. Set the clutch on the drill so that it is low and it will give
you a racheting knock when the clutch slips repeatedly.

Ron,
It sounds like you may have the timing set a tad too far ahead. Most people
start at about 12 degrees. Remember, once the ping starts you are losing
power and hurting the engine. The ideal setting is on verge of pinging. We
just use the EKE because fuel changes and other sensors don't allow us to
find the edge without an occasional knock. The directions have a pretty
good description of how to set it up.

Thanks Bob,

I've read the paper work, And I do have a light ping before it goes away,
Same with the one time starting from stoplight (this was on slight upgrade,
and did push it when leaving light). Anyway all seems to be going OK. Thanks

Bob - generally good advice but some of us living at higher
elevations where the air is thinner (7000 feet here in Santa Fe) have
found that advancing the timing another degree or two does help us.
This is probably due to the fact that we have less vacuum at
elevation so our vacuum advance on the distributor doesn't advance as
much at these elevations. By turning up the range of the EKE about
1/2 of a position it will adjust a bit more downward if it has to.
On my next trip to lower elevations (Calif in August or Sept) I'll
have to see if it is necessary to drop the timing back a little.

Thats why I had to stop and spread my head tapping out. It just was
hurting to much, Our grandkid thought it was real funny tho!!!!!!! And
wanted me to keep tapping harder!!
