E-ZPass Discount for Registered Users

  • Please note, the forum recently had a problem with outbound emails for notifications, registrations, etc. A new email provider has been set up which should resolve all email issues. If you have any further trouble, please DM Christo or reach out via the Contact Us link in the website footer.
EZ-Pass (USA) offers this discount to Motorhome owners with an E-ZPass account who apply for the benefit:

Thruway Motor Home Discount Plan:
Proof of motorhome registration is required to receive the special motorhome discount.
Motorhomes will receive the passenger vehicle rate based on the number of axles on the motorhome.
Plan Code: (MHM)

All I had to do was upload the GMC’s registration to my E-ZPass account and wait about a week before I received confirmation that it had been accepted.

Here’s the link to a list of all the regional members of the E-ZPass group in the USA: https://www.e-zpassiag.com/customer-service.

Note: even though our coaches have a single axle, strictly-speaking, the agency considers the 23ft and 26ft variants to be a “3 axle RV” and no fewer.. Don’t bother trying to persuade them that it isn’t. After several days of back and forth with customer service that included correspondence supported by photos and schematics, E-ZPass still declined to consider our GMC Motorhomes as not being a 3 axle vehicle. If you have better luck, please post a reply in this thread with the secret sauce to how you did it. 😄

Awesome -- I'll check it out!

Looks like it's in NY state only. Probably have to have a NY registration.
We’re not in NY State but are registered through that agency. We do a lot of driving to New England and back and wanted to benefit from the discounts offered for cars/SUVs/pickups. The motorhome benefit was an afterthought.

It might be worth applying for a NYS E-ZPass just for the GMC even though you’re in MASS. Curious to hear what happens if you try.

I have my GMC registered with EZPass as "2 Axle Motorhome", however, looking at the billing it seems to be variable in how it bills so I don't think they are even using that info. Usually it's billing as Class 3L (3 axle, under 7'6"). Sometimes it's calling it 3H (3 axle, over 7'6"). And very occasionally it's calling it 2H.

It's very strange to me that EZPass seems to be determining the vehicle Class for each and every toll (by camera?) to determine height and number of axles, instead of by looking up the license plate to see how I've registered it in my account.

A recent trip down the thruway, from Buffalo to Amsterdam, 250 miles, cost me $26.90 using the EZPass transponder (tag).

Luckily it's picking up the tag. Without that, it bills based on the license plate and the bill would be much higher. It would be the same as having no EZPass and having a bill mailed to the house. According to the website, that trip from Exit 50 to 27 should have cost me $39.49 as a 3H, without the tag it would have been $69.10. Same trip in a car would be $11.58 with a tag, or $20.26 if they had to bill by mail or if I didn't have a tag.

Last weekend we drove back from the Albany area to Buffalo, NY avoiding the thruway on NY20. It travels the top of the Finger Lakes, very beautiful and picturesque towns. For instance, Seneca Falls is said to be the inspiration for Bedford Falls in 'It's a wonderful life". Fuel mileage was about the same, maybe a little better even, but there was wear and tear on the brakes. And instead of 4.5 hours, the trip was ~7 hours.

I don't see anything about a motorhome discount however, can you post the link?

@tmsnyder, I agree. It doesn't make any sense. They only lockdown the billing class once one registers with the MH plan (assuming it's available to the account holder if they're not NYS residents).

Once logged into one's E-ZPass account, click on the first drop-down navigation menu (see screenshot for further details). Once on the E-ZPass Plans page, scroll down to the bottom to see if your regional operator offers Motorhome discounts under "Vehicle Discount Plans". As @Christo mentioned, it's possible that this is not offered by all E-ZPass Group operators. If not, don't continue to the next steps.

If it is offered, go back to your account dashboard, scroll down, and then click on "My Plans" Under the "My Account" section. Step through the procedure shown in the screenshots. After you've clicked "Continue" (final screenshot) -- you will be asked to enter your MH's license plate number and to upload a copy of your Insurance/registration documents. Once uploaded, you will receive a confirmation message letting you know that your application has been received.

Note: one has to upload proof of ownership documents every time the previously-uploaded proof of registration/ownership/insurance is renewed — annually in most cases.

It appears the motorhome discount is passenger car toll rate with a 3rd axle? If that's 50% more than a regular car the $39 toll would be $16 with the discount. Seems worth chasing this one!

Thank you I will check this out!

How long did it take for EZPass to receive and process the application?

Following up on this thread, I attempted to subscribe to the MHM plan with no luck online. Created two requests and both were cleared out without any change to my account.

At some point I called and talked to an actual person at EZPass. After telling him what I wanted, he looked into it, talked to his manager, and eventually figured out the process. The outcome of this phone call was that a new tag arrived in the mail. It is blue and printed on the back is "Motorhome 3 axle."

On my EZPass account, the tag is listed as one of my tags and I've replaced the old white tag with the new blue one.

Hopefully this will work for my summer travels, b/c the savings are significant vs the charges to a multi-axle high height vehicle which the system uses for our GMCs.

I just tried to renew my plan and couldn't upload the registration document. The "Upload" link was grayed-out. Called customer service and was told to create a new case under the "Support" tab on my account dashboard. Created the case and uploaded proof of insurance and registration there instead.

Does the plan expire?
