Downshift solenoid and starters

Hi All

Where is the down shift solenoid and how do I check it.
Also my starter is beginning to drag especially when hot.
Where do I get one of the high torque starters with the extra windings.
I would like to at least have one as an extra part.

It's on the bottom of the tranni. You need to drop the pan to get to it.
IIRC, to test it; with the ignition on but without the engine running, you
depress the accelerator while listening carefully with the engine cover
off. You should hear a "click" when the accelerator gets to that point
where it would activate a down shift. This method only works if your kick
down switch is functional. I'm sure there are other ways to test it and
others will hopefully chime in.

Dave, it has been my experience with many coaches that the reason the kickdown
switch doesn't work isn't because it is inop, but more because the acc linkage
is bent from years of full throttle use to get these beauties up large hills. It
is a very easy thing to check. Simply put the acc pedal ton the floor with the
air cleaner removed and watch to see if the throtle plates open completely. If
they don't, just bend the linkage just above the pedal. Nothing for sure but
something to try.

Thanks Pat. BTDT Also, even if the plates open and the secondaries dump,
the switch itself may not be working (bad or poorly adjusted switch).
Another easy way to test the solenoid is to turn key on & jump leads on the
switch (which is on the acc linkeage). I believe this is also the place to
connect the leads to the by-pass toggle switch.
