Al and I had also advanced his distributor by hand while climbing up
a steep hill at about 5500 feet above sea level just before he left
for your place, but we didn't put a timing light on it afterward. We
just knew that it worked very well and that Al's Caspro EKE also
worked very well to prevent knocking, just as it did on my GMC. I
know that Al had told me that he had some knocking when he got down
to lower elevations.

Wondering out loud -- since Al and I both use a TBI system, perhaps
with the use of a TBI system the fuel mixture is kept at the proper
ratio; so, with the lesser amount of O2 at high elevations, perhaps
we are getting a lesser fuel charge than would be experienced with a
carb system at higher elevations. This might allow quite a bit more
advanced timing, together with increased performance at altitude. I
think that those using a carb system just expect it is normal that
performance suffers a lot when up at a 7000 foot elevation, as I did
before setting the timing this way.

A lesser fuel charge might also account for the high miles per gallon
that I experienced. I don't think that I ever got such good gas
mileage when towing a car, even when I owned the GMC in Michigan or
California and used it on level ground.

The point of my last message was not that the EKE didn't work, as it
certainly did work extremely well in preventing knocking. My point
was to comment on the great performance I got when using high
advanced timing at high elevations and that it was not possible for
me to get the same performance at lower elevations without retarding
the distributor down to the level recommended by Caspro with their
EKE instructions (12 to 14 degrees).

It appears that Al's experience is similar to mine.

If Jim Anstett is reading this, you might want to give us some info
on your setup. If I recall correctly from you at the Durango rally,
you are using a knock sensor which allows you to "dial in" your
timing and that you also are set at somewhere around 30 degrees BTDC.
Since you drive in the mountains of Colorado, perhaps we are on to
something here re high altitude operation.

Maybe Dick Paterson (Mr. GMC timing IMHO) would be able to shed some
light(no pun intended) on this.

Why not slap in a Delco ESC distributer, have Howell burn a new chip and be
done with it? It's all computer controlled.

Don't be so reticent. What are the specifications? Where can we buy them?
Are they only used with Fuel injection systems? Do they self adjust to
different fuel octane's and altitudes? Did I buy a Caspro EKE when the
money could have been better used for a more modern system? Let's have and
article from you. TIA.

Thanks Dave. Sounds like it gets real complex (costly) to take the next
step beyond EKE. A good time to do it is when carburetion problems make
fuel injection a good idea. I'll plan on it when Tom gets the port Fuel
injection running. In the meantime EKE seems a lot better than my earlier
setup of low power and using high test fuel. I hope I don't have so much
power I blow my 105,000 mile transmission.

I think you're fooling yourself about the computer and throttle body being all
there is. In addition, there are a half dozen other sensors, plus the wiring
harness to contend with.

That's a nice system, but I'm a cheapskate. I would think that if the
intake horn would fit on the manifold of the 403, then all the rest is in the
computor. I think I have a book on thie early 80's computerized fuel
injection, if not I'll buy one. Nice idea, thanks
