Gary,
It sounds like your dipstick needs to be marked to show a correct full
level reading. You can do it with a prick punch or needle file. For
accurate marking, next oil & filter change, only put 5 quarts in. Run
it for a couple minutes, mark the dipstick for your "add 1 quart"
level. Add the quart, run the motor for a couple of minutes, mark the
"full" level.
You're going to get varying answers on the benefits of running a quart
"over full". Some say it's a good idea because during long climbs or
acceleration there is a quart or so in the valve covers. I've also
heard that the Olds engines have a tendency to pump the pan dry at
certain times. On the other hand, by running a quart over full you
defeat the windage tray and scraper purpose. You decide for yourself
but I think I'd want to hear from A. Greenberg on what he does. His
coach is "proof on wheels" as to what works & what doesn't.
Regarding your initial question, volume is volume. If you add a quart
of anything to the oil in the pan, you should see what represents a
quart rise on the dipstick.
HTH, I have a tendency to ramble in the early hours!
