Larry - the diode can be left in place it should not affect the
operation. The AC/Delco module has this built into its internal
circuits.
With regard to the distributor main coil you should be aware that
there are differences with regard to magnetic polarity of some of the
GM coils. For a good discussion of this and other ignition system
things go to the Western States Home Page http://www.gmcws.org/
Go to the bottom of this page and click on Tech Info. Then click on
Duane Simmon's Tedh Seminar Handouts. Then click on Ignition System.
Then go to page 12-13 and you'll see a discussion of the polarity
mismatch problem.
If your ignition coil has black, red, white wires (white tach lead)
then you must use a pickup coil with a black connector or blue tie.
If your coil wires are red, black, yellow (yellow tach) then your
pickup coil should have a yellow connector or a yellow tie.
If you have this match correct your can use either coil.
