Started cleaning up the inboard CV joints last night. I was surprised
to find a row of very fine pits along the center of each of the balls.
Is this normal wear or should I replace the joint? Actually, the
housing looks good - is it possible to replace only the balls?

Also, I'm having a tough time finding Moog ball joints locally. PEP
Boys claimed they stocked them, but the GMC parts were special order
items. When the order came in, only the lowers were in the box and they
were McQuay-Norris. The uppers were apparently lost in shipment.
According to the Ass't Mgr., PEP Boys has moved to the Perfect Circle
parts line. I got a refund and decided to look elsewhere. Should I
just settle for whatever NAPA stocks(Dana - I think) or are Moog parts
worth the trouble of searching out? I guess I could order from Cinnabar
or Gateway...

Thanks again,
Patrick

Patrick the balls in the CV joints are not interchangeable. Pitts in the
balls will accelerate wear, but whether they are a problem or not can be
checked very easily if they are together and on the coach. Drive the coach
in as tight a circle as possible in a parking lot both to the right and
left. If you hear clicking of the balls its time to replace the CV joint.
Completely remanufactured ones can be bought from NAPA and PEP boys

Thomas,

I'm referring to the inboard CV's. Haven't cleaned up the outboard ones
yet. The CV's were silent before I took them apart. Hopefully, they
will be after I put them back together.

I have been able to get moog here in NY. If you are really having trouble I
can arrange to have my parts dealer ship them directly to you.

Arch,

Autozone here doesn't carry Moog. Jim Bounds got me the Moog joints and
tie rod ends for a good price. Could have saved myself a lot of time
and frustration by calling him first. Thanks Jim!!
