years. The clamps supplied with the boots fit more than tight enough if
they're put on correctly. I've never had one come back because it was
leaking grease.......Jim Davis

I'm getting ready to rebuild my half-shafts and I've noticed in a couple
GMCMI newsletters that its recommended you double wrap the clamps on the
big end. This supposedly allows you to clamp the boot tighter(to avoid
grease leaks) as friction is less with metal against metal than with
metal against rubber. This seems overkill to me. If friction against
the rubber is a problem, then a little silicon spray on the boot before
applying the clamp should fix that.

Any ideas?

Use a new superboot, the clamp is set to higher torque and will not leak.
The boot comes with enough hi temp grease to do the complete job. Never saw
a boot leak that was put on right and had the right amount of grease in it.
I have never done a GMC but many toronados.

Thanks Thomas! I'm planning to use superboots. However, I'm going to
use the Mobil1 grease to pack the joints and the bearings.

Its fine but be sure you use a torque wrench to put on the clamps. You will
need a special clamp tool that takes the torque wrench.

where did you get the mobil 1 grease?

The mobil1 grease is widely available in most autoparts stores. I
thought it was approved by Mobil for CV joint use, but now I can't find
that information. I have emailed Mobil to ask them if they recommend it
for CV joint service. If they don't, I'll go with Redline CV2. It's
more expensive than Mobil1, but with the small quanitity needed to do
the bearings and shafts it's not that much of a difference.

Can't say the same about their oil. $10/qt. is too steep even for me to
rationalize.

Don't remember if Arch posted these two URL's:

Red Line Synthetic Oil Corp.

Pat I believe that the proper grease for the CV joint is now Green. At least
the grease that came with my boots was green.
