It's more likely that you need a new fuel vapor separator:

No liquid fuel should be getting past this part to even get to the charcoal canister.

Once you replace the separator and surrounding hoses and get the system pulling Purge vacuum through the canister, (study vacuum diagrams) the
canister charcoal will purge of liquid and vapor fuel and be good to go again. You probably should change the filter on the bottom of the canister as
it may be from the 70s.

I replaced mine with a junk yard option. I figured mine was 40 years old and been flooded multiple times, i doubt the charcoal was any good.
It is the same diameter, but taller. It also vents out the top so it doesnt have that filter on the bottom getting hit by the road spray.

Because Im me I put a valve in the purge line so it only purges at part throttle, based on ported vacuum, like a modern car.

I also hooked the vent line to the clean side of the air cleaner
