Caravanning / Convoying

If you were planning on doing a transcontinental trip, would you join other GMC'ers in a convoy?

  • Definitely, even if that meant adjusting my schedule and/or going at a slower pace.

In 2016, I went on a cross-country trip in my previous GMC. During 6 months of travel, I only saw 3 GMCs. It got me thinking, has anyone in the past, convoyed coast to coast? I'm not talking about going to the rallies and jamborees. Just traveling. I thought it would be cool if GMC's joined in along the way, should they also happen to be heading in the same direction. Nothing overly organized and not necessarily the same final destinations. Like covered wagons, safety in numbers. Just a thought.

It certainly is fun to be in a caravan but the highways heading East are complete crap. In August 2019, I drove to the National Corvette Museum in a caravan with my 2017 Grand Sport. We had several clubs join us enroute to the museum. However, coming back on Interstate 40, the bridge transitions in Arkansas were so bad that it caused my left rear wheel to crack. After an overnight stay at the hotel, my left rear tire went flat on a Sunday no less when tire stores aren’t open. The next day I had to call Uber for a ride to Wally World to pick up a tire pump. Once I had air in it, I drove it to the nearest tire store only to find out my wheel was cracked. And, 2 other members had their wheels crack as well.93B19A0B-7AC2-4DA0-94C3-5CD0878B83F0.webp06693368-E9CC-4455-9DEB-A7BCE7B4C148.webp

I know what you mean. In 2020, I had a Winnebago and drove to Houston via TN, AL, LA. On I-10 from LA to TX, it was white knuckle and brutal. At one point in a construction area, I think I had the front wheels off of the ground, because the speed limit was too high thru the work zone and I hit a bump that sent the RV bucking. I-20 in MS/AL was pretty bad, too. Heck, most of them are bad.

On a side note, one of the members with a cracked wheel was driving a 2019 ZR1 which I thought had forged wheels. We apparently aren’t alone with cracked wheels as a class-action lawsuit was filed against GM for poor quality wheels. GM had been trying to dismiss the lawsuit but a judge recently allowed it to move forward. A set of forged replacement wheels are now around $4000 and can go up from there.
