This person is making cabinents for his van.

The steps are not bad, the look is good, clean

He is using 1/2 ply, I was thinking 1/4 may be enough to handle any storage weight.

Stan,

There are problems with using 1/4 ply anywhere in cabinets.

For the vertical sides, it isn't thick enough to dado in the grooves to make a proper shelf engagement.
For the shelving, even if you do have a back panel to fasten it to, it does not have enough beam strength to carry anything more than paper napkins,
and even then, it may sag in time.
I have made a couple of very thin shelves stay straight by gluing a piece of hardwood for the length, but it has to be both long edges and now that
cuts into what you cam put on the shelf beneath.
I have used 1/4 ply for back panels and it was OK. It is solid enough to make the truss so the cabinet will not take a slant with load.

If you want a vertical panel to be lighter, just cut out the middle. If you don't want it open, cover the hole with venier or thin ply. I jigsawed
designs in the ends of a ply bookshelf.

Marathon Coach uses a Balsa wood plywood that's very light. I haven't looked for it and don't have a source, but I'm sure it's available.
