Brake issue

[Tom Lins]

After removing the EFI from our GMC I was going to move it back to the storage facility
Started it up and put my foot on the brake and it almost went to the floor
Pumped the brakes and it came up but I was leery of moving it.
I checked the master cylinder and the rear reservoir was low.
I re-chocked the wheels and while doing so found a chunk of the friction material by the left front wheel.
I have ordered new pads.
The calipers are 80 mm that I put on with new semi-metallic pads about 9 months ago just before going to Tallahassee.
Has anyone had this happen to them?

If you mean a bonded (no rivets) pad or shoe come unbonded, yes I have had it happen. Most recently on a Dexter electric drum brake on tandem trailer.

Common occurrence with today's bonded lining on disc brakes. Tightened
environmental regulations drove American Manufacturers off shore in droves.
Both high temperature and the resultant off-gassing of harmful stuff, plus
the elimination of many friction materials (asbestos) has led us into
having to settle for poor quality brake pads from who knows where. Some
high quality stuff still exists, though prices reflect it. In extreme duty
applications like motorhomes, ALWAYS INSTALL RIVETED LININGS, front and
rear. Your life as well as other lives around you depend upon it.

Your points are correct, but in the interim there are some terrific adhesives that have been introduced since that are environmentally friendly, exhibit better extreme temperature resistance and superior shear.

I spent time gluing metal parts together, and little oblong pieces of copper clad aluminum to kapton manufacturing speakers and saw the adhesives progress quickly right after the previous generation of high temperature adhesives were outlawed.

Tom....without seeing the rotor and the other pads i would guess that you had that pad frozen to the rotor from heat/rust when you parked it. We call
that pad stamping and i would phathom to guess you have big rusty imprint of the pad on the rotor as well. The down side to cintered bonded pads that
are used hard, parked hot then left to sit for a long period of time. (Nothing you did wrong btw.....)

As for pads, there are some very very good bonded brake pads out there including the ones we use on disc brake semi trucks and buses. Although
rivetted brake linings are very good they are on their way out sadly as they tend to be used on none cintered lining materials.

Jim Bounds has a very good video on brake pads/shoes in regards to why he prefers rivetted and he is right....the lining materials are not as
agressive so not as hard on rotors/drums.....but at the cost of a bit more heat from the assembly and less pad service life due to softer compounds.

Dont get me started on brakes....its one of my expertise from my pro racing days and my current dayly job.

I took the wheel off to check what the damage is and surprisingly the only issue was the friction material came off the back plate.
Doesn't appear to have damaged the rotor, lucky this happened in my driveway.
I did find that the CV joint boot is torn but I doubt it is related to the brake pad.
Ordered new pads and a boot from jimk.

Followup on the friction material separating from the steel back plate

When I replaced the damaged brake pads I replaced both sides with EBC pads
and on both sides in the front, the outside pad friction material had
separated from the steel back plate.
They had only been in the coach for 9 months and maybe 1500 miles.
Oh well hopefully the EBC pads do better.

Padid on my Porsche and VW Touareg.
Pagids are a little dusty but the all work as they should.
