I've decided that the way to attack it is to tack weld the threaded boss
back into the pan so that I don't have to remove the pan---I'm told that
they are pure misery to get to seal. I have a good friend who has a portable
welder; I'm gonna get him to lie down under it and do it. I think if I get
him to tack a couple of spots for strength, then seal it with Devcon
(similar to JB weld) that I can get a satisfactory fix without burning a lot
of oil in the crankcase.
I'll let you know how it does; is this a common problem?
