I was at NAPA this morning ordering CV boots and other parts. I told
the salesguy the part numbers I wanted and he asked for the
application. I told him "GMC motorhome" and about fell over in the
floor when he responded, "Oh yeah, front wheel drive - made them from
about 72 to 76 didn't they?". How often does that happen?

Anyway, the band-type boot clamps he showed me did not have retainer
clips. I asked about that and he said you just bend the band back after
tightening and that's enough to hold it. I'm not too comfortable with
that. What's the group's experience with these. I'd feel better if the
retainer clips were there.

Patrick I am putting the precision super boots on mine part # 2456SB and
they come with the right clamps and 3 packets of the right grease, $13.90
each. they are well worth the money.

Patrick............I'm in the driveshaft business. Get the "Band-It" type of
clamp with the retainer clip. The other type is marginal to say the
least...........Jim Davis

I've ordered superboots and will check the clamps for the retainers.
For the grease, I picked up three tubes of Redline CV2.

Thanks Jim!

Can these be picked up at NAPA, etc?

Patrick.........Most of the time, the clamps that come with the boots aren't
too hot. I'm sure any decent auto parts house will have the good ones. Many
garages and boat outfits have stainless "Band-It" clamps and the tool to put
them on with. I purchase the stuff in rolls with the clips and cut each one
to length. I put boots on many of my driveshafts because of the weather
conditions here on the Oregon coast. The salt water eats up splines and
yokes...........Jim Davis

Jim,

You nailed it. The bands that came with the NAPA boots(even the
superboots) are junk. I'll call around the usual places to see who has
"Band-it" clamps starting with NAPA. I bought the tool from them so
hopefully they'll exchange the clamps.

Thanks,
Patrick

Aren't the clamps that come with the Super boots the same ones that came on
the original boots? They have always worked great.

Am I missing something?

Thomas,

The clamps that came with the superboots from NAPA had a series of holes
and teeth and then a crimp "bridge". The "band-it" style clamps with
the retainers as shown in the X7425 maintenance manual are what I'm
looking for.
