Hi All!
Just returned from a short (550mile) trip in the GMC.
We went to the Gettysburgh-Lancaster area GMC ran great, new Alcoas and
Tires really seemed to make a difference ( probably more so after I thought
about the price). What did surprise me was we saw no other GMCs , this is
the first trip we ever made that we didn't see at least one. Where are all
of you? I do have one question I will most likely need to replace the 4D
house battery, many have replaced it with 2 six volt Golf Cart batteries.
Which ones will fit in the rear battery compartment and who carries them(no
Sams Club here)? How are they placed in the compartment?
BTW I have been wondering ,does anybody on the net own my prior '77
Birchaven, rear bath, silver grey 2 tone exterior last #s 00843? Just
curious.

Troops.........A few days ago, one of the group recommended a site on
batteries. I had a chance to look it over today. It's so good, I printed it
out and will keep it in our coach It covers everything from care and
feeding of batteries to what to do if you have electrical problems by the
side of the road. Check it out. You'll be happy you did.......Jim Davis on

If that doesn't work... try

I agree Jim the whole site is worthwhile...

Got a dumb battery question. Our GMC has 1 regular Automotive
starting battery, and two 12V deep cycle batteries (1 up front and 1
with the generator). Is this the correct configuration? If not, what
is?

Les, I have a '73 Painted Desert and that is the way my batteries have
always been positioned.

Hi Les and Des

My battery configuration on my 73 is 1-starter battery, 1-Deep cell house
battery, both on pass. side, And in rear, 1-Onan batt. and 1-deep cell
house. I know the back-end set was changed, for both batteries are in a
steel angle iron slider right next to Onan and the orig. batt. holder still
mt in place, deep Rt. corner of Onan/battery compartment. Thats how mine is
set up

Les & Des,

There are several primary wiring set ups I've seen in our coach, this one
is pretty common.

That set up will work OK, the one problem you have though if you do not
have an A/B selector switch on the 2 rear batteries is that they are hooked
in parrallel and will discharge themselves over time if not used and
recharged often.

You need to have a way of isolating the 2 rear batteries when they are not
being used.

I use a marine style Gest rotor switch (red in color) to seperate a dual
battery set up. You can find them at most any marine supply house or call
me and I'll send you one. Hook up is pretty simple. If you need a diagram
of the hook up, call me.

Hope this helps,

You should give some consideration to a COMBINER. I am using them and so
is Heinz, they are automatic and will seperate the batteries. see the
article and references on my web page
