HELP EMERGENCY
We are doing our BACK WHEEL BEARINGS so far we have the Front (outside )
Bearing off but can't figure out how to remove the rest of the parts, inside
Bearing etc. We are just Greasing. (but want to check Bearings for wear
etc.)
Can anyone explain.

Marlene,

You have to slide the brake drum/hub assembly off the spindle. You may
have to adjust back the brake shoes to get the drum off. Do you have
the Maintenance Manual? The procedure is spelled out in there I'm
sure. Once you get the hub off, you have to remove the real seal(buy
new seals) to get the back bearing out. Clean up the hub, bearings and
races with mineral spirits(don't get any inside the brake drum) so you
can examine for wear. Repack and replace per the manual. You might
want to visit the Timken web site for tips on setting bearing clearance
if you have a dial indicator handy. If not, set up per the manual.

We do have the drum assembly off . We were hoping to reuse the seals. but
don't understand how to remove the seals without ruining them. No we don't
have the right manual for this procedure.
To reinstall etc. we will be using a regular torque wrench it's all we have.

Marlene,

Once you've removed the grease seal, the inner bearing will come out. If you
are cleaning and re-using the bearings, there is no need to remove the races
from the hub. Clean, inspect and re-pack just like Patrick described in his
post.
This is what I found on Gene's website about rear wheel bearing torque, read
carefully:

"REAR SPINDLE NUTS
The Maintenance manual is very mis-leading on how to tighten the rear
spindle nut. The 25 ft-lbs is only the initial torque to seat the bearing &
then it is to be loosen & re-torqued to finger tight or less. Over torque
of the spindle nut will lead to a very hot bearing very quickly. I have
seen the spindle shear off on several coaches that were torqued to the 25
ft-lbs level & left there (the wheel passed the coach as it slowed down).
Big $$$$$$ repair.Duane "

Good luck,

Our biggest problem is that the rubber seal with metal ring is very tight
and doesn't want to come out. What is the best way to remove it???

Marlene,

If you don't have a seal remover, try this:

Lay the drum on the ground, seal facing up. Spray with some penetrating oil
where the seal meets the hub. Now tap one side of the seal (metal ring)
lightly using a punch/screwdriver and a hammer - that should break the seal
loose from the hub. You shoud be able to pry the seal out of the hub using a
bar/large screwdriver. Be careful not to damage anything.
