Axle shaft seals- final drive

When you remove the axle you pull it out of what looks
like a differential. There should be a seal that keeps
the goo in the differential (final drive?). Based on
the mess I have under there mine are shot. These seals
are not "on" the axle but seal around the axle as it
exits the differential. Logically there is a seal at
the other (wheel) end. The outboard end may be the
same as the wheel bearing seal? I have not got them
out yet but plan to do it this weekend Burr, it's
still really cold up here in CT.

Alan,

I know we're waltzing around semantics, but the inboard end of the axle has
a constant velocity joint that bolts to the output flange of the final
drive. It sounds like you're saying that you pulled the output shaft out of
the final drive. Is that correct? I don't think these should simply pull
out.

Emery,

I'm at the limit of my knowledge on this one since I've never been into the
final drive. I think Alan might have his hands full if he's pulled that
shaft out. Someone step in here to help him out.

Yielding the floor,

If he unscrewed the two bolts that hold the final drive output shaft to the
engine after having taken the axle off. then it will simply pull from the final
drive. This is by the way the right ( passenger side). There is a seal just
inside the final drive that can be removed and replaced. They are a bit hard to
find, but Cinnabar has them and they aren't as expensive as one would think. I
don't rememper how much, but I remember that I didn't go into shock when I
learned the price so must not be too bad. The seal isn't hard to replace. This
is as I remember it, but take into account that I have CRS most of the time.
