I was curious o see how towing the Saturn would affect my average mpg
numbers.
3,692 miles without the car 8.283 mpg
3,632 miles with the car 7.533 mpg
The roughly 10% fuel penalty for towing seems to answer the question as
to whether it makes sense to tow or rent a car when desirable.
This is not a tank-to-tank calculation as I didn't tow a car for the
first 4 months and always towed the car for the balance of the year.
My average had increased from 7.609 in 1993 to 9.100 by 1996 but in '97
the average dropped to 8.407 and '98 dropped (partly due to the toad) to
7.894 mpg.
Keep in mind I have a very tired engine.
