Anyone using flat LCD screens on a GMC'd PC?

One of my Apple Studio's bit the dust and I'm wondering if there are any
experiences out there with other makes/models.

At the time the Apple was the only choice. Not so anymore :-)

Of particular interest is daylight viewing. The Apple was excellent for
that. Much, much better than various laptop TFT's I've used in same place,
i.e. as map view, etc. next to dash. http://www.my-gmc.com/Almost_done.jpg

Thought I'd check here before just buying another Apple Studio.

TIA - Heinz

Heinz,

Paul Bartz put me on to a site last week(the URL is on my work machine,
sorry) that had an assortment of monitors and tvs using flat screens. I
followed it to the manufacturer's site and found that they make a 15
inch TV with separate receiver - the screen is 2 inches deep and the
whole thing weighs 8lb. I feel in love til I saw the $2,500 price
tag. IIRC, the retail site that Paul told me about had 6 inch
monitors for around $400.

If Paul doesn't chime in before Monday morning, I'll post the URL from
work.

Hi Heinz,
Nice pic of the flatscreen monitor...can you tell me
more about the hookup to the PC? Like what is the
longest distance the monitor can be placed away from
the PC..and what does the back of the monitor look like? I it mostly flat
in back?
Thanks,

Ouch.
The 15" Apple is down to $995 now that there is competition.

The problem with all the info is that none specifically says that it's
daylight viewable, as in "outside" :-)

I just lucked out when I bought the Apple and now I'm spoiled.

BTW, the Apple has NTSC input as well as PC Video and it works great tied to
the VCR.

I'll do some more digging with the links received sofar.

Yup, mostly flat. It normally sits closer to the front as an extension to
the dash instruments. I have a better picture on the site but couldn't find
it quickly :-). Gonna' have to 'index' one of these days.

I use a splitter that splits keyboard, mouse and video signals to up to 4
sets. I use RF and Infrared keyboards. Have 3 stations in use. Table,
cockpit and rear.

Even without the splitter I would think you could run the monitior 10-15
feet away from the PC. We regularly use 10 foot extensions. If high res is
used a good cable will be required though.

When used as my TV screen I usually move it towards the rear of the center
pedestal.

What I'd really like is a mount on the roof, kinda like track lighting.

This month's PC Magazine, May 23.2000, p. 183, does a review of flat panel
displays. They say that the ViewSonic VP151 is the best. It looks like
the Compaq TFT 5010 might be a good contender also, though.

Must be because ViewSonic is a big advertiser.
I don't trust "any" review for more than a very loose guide.

I've not seen a good ViewSonic yet, but I guess there's always a first time.

I'm going to postpone my search for a new LCD until next trip I think so
that I can get hands on (or rather eyes on) at a Fry's or CompUSA. Nobody
says anything re daylight viewing in their advertising or specs.

I certainly agree about the magazine reviews favoring their advertising
customers.

http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/reviews/0,6755,2558511,00.html

ZD Labs have come up with a way to gauge / compare brightness of
displays. They call it the Maximum Luminance. The Compaq monitor comes in
with the most points on this particular test.

As far as the brightest LCD monitors I've seen personally, the Sony's at
Fry's are very impressive and very thin. Very expensive too, though.
