I certainly agree about the magazine reviews favoring their advertising
customers.

ZD Labs have come up with a way to gauge / compare brightness of
displays. They call it the Maximum Luminance. The Compaq monitor comes in
with the most points on this particular test.
As far as the brightest LCD monitors I've seen personally, the Sony's at
Fry's are very impressive and very thin. Very expensive too, though.
