You need to mark the wire for #1 and mark the dizzy on the side with a
marker to indicate #1 and then remove the dizzy. First you need to get the
engine on TDC (top dead center) for cyclinder #1 (looking at engine thru
the engine cover is first (front) spark on your left side). The timing
mark on the crank should also be on or near the timing mark when close.
The damper could be a little off. The way that I use is to remove the
plugs (make it easier to turn the motor over). put a finger over the #1
plug position and bump the engine over. The engine cylinder will go thru
its 4 cycles (suck, compress, bang and blow) You are looking for the top to
the compress cycle. When I feel the piston coming up to compress the
mixture just before bang, that is TDC. I sometime put a screwdriver in the
hole to feel the piston position and then use a socket and breaker to move
the screwdriver to indicate the piston position. Never do this with the
starter when using the screwdriver. Now that you have the engine set at
TDC you can now go about reinstalling he dizzy. The rotor when the dizzy
is installed should be pointed and the mark that you put on the side of
the dizzy. Please note that the gear on the bottom of the dizzy will lnot
drop in without moving the rotor. You will need to offset the rotor
typically to the right to have it line up with yur mark. This may take
several tries. Now your read to put everything back together. Besure you
are using the correct firing order.
First make sure the vacuum hose toot he dizzy is disconnected and plugged.
Timing light on the #1 spark plug and powered up. Take a white crayon and
mark the timing mark on the dampener to see the timing mark when running.
Double check that everything is in it proper place and now your ready to
try and start. It should start and maybe run smooth or roughly. It it
runs use the timing light to set the dizzy to the proper BTDC to about 10,
I now that the book says 8, but 10 or 12 is better. I usually move the
dizzy so the engine runs smoothly and take it for a test ride. If it pulls
with knocking thru the RPM range then check with timing liight and leave it
alone.
In the 6Y section of your manual has a get set of pictures for reference.
If you don't have the manual download it from Bdubs site. Page 6Y-34 shows
the timing marks. Weather having the points or HEI the procedure is the
same.
