The answer David depends on what you are going to use it for.
In the case of the GMC motorhome, the original engine is probably the best
you will find. They tended to use the best Toronado blocks that have all of
the special parts for longevity. In the case of a suitable engine for a
rebuild stick with the Toronado engines, and only the oldsmobile blocks.
Reason is that they have a lot of high performance parts that add to the
longevity of the engine. they have larger oil pans, windage trays in the
crankcase etc.
In the case of a replacement it depends on what you are going to do in the
rebuild. For starters any oldsmobile 455 engine is fine for a rebuild if you
are going to do a complete engine rebuild that includes new pistons. for the
horsepower that we are developing all of the blocks are excellent and are
really over designed.
