The 403 used in the 77 & 78 motorhomes is definitely an Oldsmobile
engine. There's a link on Gene Fisher's web page to the Olds FAQ that
explains how to tell the difference between the two. Easiest way to
tell is measure the width of the intake manifold - the 403's is
narrower. The exact dimension is on the aforementioned FAQ page. While
similar in dimensions to the 455, the 403 is referred to as a "small
block" olds engine. As far as performance goes, this has been pretty
well beaten to death so you might want to check the archives, but the
upshot is you won't really be able to tell much difference in
performance and you might get a little better gas mileage.
