Linda knew that I needed another engine water pump for the other GMC we have. ( It's another, not broke. But I'm fixing it anyway thing.) So while in Tucson. She ordered a CARDONE 55-21118H pump on line. They sent the wrong pump. A 55-21118. Now I need to wait the 4 to 8 weeks. And on top of that. This upcoming pump will cost me more than if I had ordered both pumps from Jim K at Applied to start with. I have met the enemy. And he is me. Bob Dunahugh

Bob, when I was gathering sample water pumps for a technical presentation I
was doing at a rally, I ordered 5 pumps from 5 different vendors,
specifiying the heavy duty version. Only got ONE correct one. Guess who?
Applied!. Used the same part number for all of them. All the boxes that
they came in had the same part number on the outside. SUCH IS THE SAD STATE
OF AFTERMARKET PARTS TODAY. I am sure if you or I ordered fuel pumps, or
alternators, or carbs, that the exact same thing would happen. That is why
I have a local rebuilder do my starters and alternators for me. I won't
even start on fan clutches. What a P.I.T.A.

Jim,
I buy my Cad water pumps off the Cadillac vendors to insure that I get the
iron 4.25" impellor.
I've never had a pump failure, but I don't have any idea what bearing I
have. Pardon my
ignorance, but how do you tell the difference? Help all us dummies out,
please.

Difficult to see the difference unless you have one in hand to compare. The
castings are all very similar, but the impeller shaft, seal, bearing pack
and impeller are different. Some of the gasket surfaces are slightly
different enough so that a different shaped gasket is used, too. The
outside diameter of the ball bearing, and the roller bearing, are the same,
so that they can be pressed into the same sized bore in the casting.
Impellers are different sized as well. Some fill the pump cavity, and some
do not. Some have a flat back that comes very close to the engine timing
cover, and some are just the vanes of the pump. There must be flow rate
differences, I suspect that some are for standard duty, some air
conditioning, station wagon, agricultural and motor home use. Information
on their applications is seldom mentioned.
There used to be rebuilders around for water pumps, and rebuild kits
as well, but they are all obsolete now. My best suggestion for replacements
on the Cadillac would be to try to find a rebuilder through Hemmings Motor
News. Just what I would try first. Then it might be the company that used
to be called Cadco. I do have pictures, but, I have a new Samsung 8 phone,
and still have some learning to do with the camera. Might have to go back
to the store for a lesson or two.

Garry,
Tom Prior mentioned the following in a previous message on waterpumps. Don’t know if it is of any help.

“make sure the part number on the
bearing is a WR (roller).................not a WB (ball)”

The problem with that reference is a huge lack of consistency. That might
have been the original intent, BUT "stuff happens". I purchased 5 different
pumps, all from different vendors, and they all had the same part number on
the box. "Changes to", seems to be the name of the game. Buyer beware makes
more sense.

Bob,

I really hate to tell you this, but if Linda has hard copy that says she ordered 55-21118H, then neither of you can take any credit for the SNAFU.
I strongly suggest that you contact the supplier and make those people make good on that part number. They should pay for the return shipping (if
they want it back) and the shipping of the correct part number. If this does not happen and promptly, please feel free to post the facts here and on
Face Book. If you don't want to post it in FaceBook, I will do it for you.

If she ordered the H version, it is 7~10$us more. So, I they did charge for the "H" version and shipped the non-H pump, that is fraud and be sure
that you tell them that.

I lucked out. The only place I could find that had an actually listing for the 55-21118H pump was Summit Racing, and that is what they shipped.

Getting a durable water pump has got way more difficult then I ever expected. I've ended up getting 4 totally different pumps in the last 4 week. I'm truly sick of installing pumps. I think we all just need to get our pumps from Jim K at Applied. As he's the one that has delivered for us. That way he can order in bulk for availability. Then it's HIS PROBLEM to keep track of the codes we need. NOT US. Bob Dunahugh
