The gem in the cars is the 83 olds diesel. If it has a 350DX block it can
be made into one of the strongest and most potent engines you can put in
the
GMC motorhome. It has a forged crank and all the goodies you could want.
Mondello sells the complete kit to convert it. Will bolt right up to the
TH425 tranny.

Tom: Assuming that it is converted to gasoline, how does the 350 match the
torque of the much larger 455?

In regards to your comment about no pinging on the Mondello 455 heads, what
is the factor in the design that allows this? Do you think that the engine
will run comfortably on 87 octane gas with these heads?

I noticed the posted reference to CC Magazine calling the 500 Cadillac
engine one of the 10 worst. I'm curious what people think about that
engine. I understand that it is about 100# lighter than the 455. Aside from
the installation hassles and the fact that it is not standard to the GMC,
what do people think about it as an engine for the coach?

goes. I do plan to put an electric fan on mine. Use a headlight delay
switch to turn off the fan 10 min after I stop. This should cut down
on heat soak. I have one on my sob and it works well. Now if we
had an electric water pump to add to this we could let it run a little
longer and really cool the old girls off. Maybe if we could plumb the
electric in parallel with the engine one we could even give it a boost
when we were just idling in traffic. This has some possibilities
Emery thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I talked with Bob Robertson in Los Robles a few days ago who runs a 500 Cad
engine with ONLY electric fans. He has two of them (Scott brand), with one
on a thermostatic switch and the other on a manual switch. They are pull
fans (on the engine side of the radiator) and he has no problems with
overheating. He runs comfortably in city traffic and has traveled in Death
Valley in the summertime with this setup. He wasn't sure if it was
necessary but he went to a 3 fin core from the 2 fine of the stock GMC
(assuming that I have described it correctly).
