1973 Sequoia for sale. 107K miles. In the past two years; new timing chain and gears, compression in all cyls. 155 to 165 lbs. replaced front motor mount, thermostat, all hoses and drive belts. Replaced final drive with a 3.42. Flushed cooling system, new water pump. Installed Dave Lenzi front hubs, turned rotors, installed 80 mm pads and all new brake hoses. Install new Alcoa wheels and new tires. Replaced Viair pressure switch. Installed safety chains to the trailer hitch. repaired window leaks and resealed all roof vents. Replaced alternator and installed new correct engine battery. Installed a proper water tank breather. Installed a new propane pressure regulator. Removed and cleaned inside and outside A/C pods. Installed new toilet. Dropped gas tanks, painted and replaced all gas lines. Installed improved gas tank vent system. Dropped sewer tank and replaced valve, revised the system to make dumping easier. Previous owner reupholstered the interior, installed new fridge, installed electric fuel pump, installed electronic distributor, rebuilt transmission, installed trans cooler, rebuilt radiator, installed Bilstein shocks. Plus many other fixes and improvements. includes many spare parts including two sets of air bags. Includes the manuals and many other publications. I have documented all the changes and improvements going back to 1995! Unit is in Western Canada and is ready to drive away. Health issue forces sale. $22,000 Cdn. $15,400 US. We've decided to include all the kitchen utensils, SS pots and pans, cleaning supplies, extension cord, water hose and all the publications including a complete set of Cinnabar news letters. Also a 4 bike, bike carrier and a tow bar

This may apply to your sale or it may not due to your circumstances. I am interested in purchasing a GMC RV. I had a 1979 Gerstenslager Bookmobile which I was converting into a mobile home. Ended having to move out of Ct before it was finished, sold to an antique dealers son (liked the history aspect). So now I am retired, on an extended vacation in San Miguel (almost two years), not wanting to stay here for the rest of my life. So my thought is to travel in a GMC RV since they are relatively speaking the best for such living being retired.

I do not know any rules of owning and using one, insurance is unknown, what states will allow the drive through, what is needed ect. I don't know much but want to know so I can be on my own traveling the lower 48 states. Buying one is a start but there are even rules on how to drive the vehicle to Sugarland, TX where my brother has a mechanic willing to help with initial scope of work needs. (plus I can stay till on the road).

So I guess question 1. is how it gets registered from there, so I can get it to sit in Tx till.
2. What insurance needs will there be for the registering of it. Is my California license [ClassC] good enough.
This may be foolish to you but again I need to start somewhere - thank you for your time and understanding.

Note that this GMC is in Canada. You may not be interested in importing it, although it is a fairly straightforward undertaking....
 
As mentioned, knowledge is limited in registering, (importing), insuring and transporting the vehicle into or within the States and down to Texas. I have noted one in Washington which is a 23', which is probably a better choice. It also allows my stop in San Francisco to empty out the storage unit. Straight down from Winnepeg was kind of interesting (similar to traveling along the great Mississippi River) which might have been an enjoyable detour, but all of this will take some time and winter is approaching. Hope your sale goes well for you. Seems like a well-maintained vehicle based on your notes plus the "not wanting to let go thought" - Take care. Thank you for your reply.

I don't know the 'right' way to do it. However, I wouldn't be afraid to buy it, insure it, and then travel 'home' with the bill of sale in hand. If you get pulled over for no plates just tell them what you are doing.

Don't put a plate on it that is not registered to the vehicle, that would be illegal.

For instance, I bought a suburban in Georgia and drove it back to NY this way. Georgia had no way to issue me a temporary tag b/c I wasn't a resident. NY had no way to issue me a tag b/c I didn't own it yet. I drove it Atlanta to Buffalo, saw many police cars and was never pulled over.

Maybe the seller would be willing to leave their registration on the vehicle for you to drive it home, you just insure it. You can put insurance on any vehicle, you don't even need to own it, they just use the VIN. You can activate it the moment you get it.

Just my $0.02 from buying a couple cars out of state and driving them home.

Come to think of it, that's how I brought my GMC from El Paso TX to Buffalo NY as well. No plates.

To plate it in TX, you'd have to actually own it and have the plates on you before you travel to pick it up. That would mean buying it sight unseen. I wouldn't be afraid to do that if you have a trusted set of eyes check it out in advance.

Your regular driver's license is all that's needed (crazy right?)

You would get at least the minimum required car insurance for the state you are registering it within. Ideally you would want to get an agreed value policy. You can search on this forum for more info on insurance.

Here what we do for a buyer living out of province is simply sign over the registration, give you a bill of sale and you are good to go. The original plates stay on the vehicle. Then when you get home, you register the vehicle. If you are from the same province then you register the sale and buy new plates at the time of sale.

Where in western canada are you? Alberta? You wouldn’t happen to have photos?
 
Even though its for sale, I'm going to go ahead and replace the front carpet and install the new power seats. Plus continue on with any other improvements that I find are needed.
