There is a universal joint inside the steering column where it tilts. The universal joint has a spring loaded split plastic sphere which is worn in mine (press the "Download" button at the upper right to see video).

The sphere kit is cheap at $10 bucks from Rockauto. The current part number is ACDelco 26026564. The kit has an upgraded design & spring assembly design over the original.

I also installed a new ignition key tumbler ACDelco D1402B @$22 and the ignition switch rack and gear assembly kit Dorman 83211 at $10 bucks from Rockauto as well.

This is a great thing to be aware of.
Sir, I don’t know how to answer your issue with a fix. The spring is not bad it has worn a spot on the shaft. If you remove the nylon ball and rotate it 180* it will put the spring on a virgin part of the shaft and will take the play out of the ball, http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/s-10-steering-wheel-caddy-conversion/p47388-wear-pattern.html

Hi Chuck. I had seen your photos of the wear points from the spring and considered moving the spring to new wear points as you suggest. But a new sphere kit was $10 at Rock Auto so for the effort required to disassemble and re-assemble, I thought I would just get a new one. The spring in the new one presses outwards on the two halves of the sphere apart to take up any slack. It does seem a much better way to do it and the new sphere has much closer tolerances. Overall a big improvement!
