The Alternator Exciter wire, also known as the “Nichrome” wire is a special purpose wire bundled into the chassis wiring harness. Its purpose is to limit the electric current to the alternator field windings. Under normal operations it works well, but has been known to overheat and melt the wiring’s plastic insulation during certain types of alternator failures.

This is a better fix for this issue than the popular APC cable.
